"Het ‘verborgen’ naakt van Walcheren" - the hidden nudity of Walcheren
In the exhibition "Het ‘verborgen’ naakt van Walcheren" (The hidden nudity of Walcheren) five erotic badges from the Van Beuningen Family Collection were on display. These badges had the unambiguous titles:
- walking phallus
- vulva with a crown of three phalluses and holding another that pushes a wheelbarrow in which there are four phalluses
- winged phallus
- phallus with testicles
- old man with knees drawn up displaying his phallus
These badges have not been published in either volume of HEILIG EN PROFAAN. Surf and discover comparable examples that can be found in the books.
A considerable number of the erotic insignias in the Van Beuningen Family Collection come from finds in the province of Zeeland, mostly from the sunken village of Nieuwlande. On 5th November 1530 this hamlet was hit by a storm and flood tide that affected the whole of the eastern part of the island Zuid-Beveland. When in 1532 the island was once again hit by a flood tide the center of Nieuwlande completely vanished under the waves.
