Publications

The collector H.J.E. van Beuningen is the source of inspiration and stimulator behind the research on and publication of the late medieval badge. The Collection Family Van Beuningen includes about 4000 documented badges and parts of badges. Thus it is the largest and most representative collection of medieval badges worldwide. In the last 25 years, the SMRPI has published four important reference books on late medieval badges: HEILIG EN PROFAAN 1 (1993), HEILIG EN PROFAAN 2 (2001), HEILIG EN PROFAAN 3 (2012) and HEILIG EN PROFAAN 4 (2018). Altogether, about 4300 religious and profane badges, from a large number of both private and public collections, are included. More about these four books and how they can be ordered:

HEILIG EN PROFAAN (RELIGIOUS AND SECULAR) 4 is a new publication of the Medieval Badges Foundation in cooperations with SPA uitgevers. The book presents c. 800 new finds of badges and other unpublished pewter objects. Every badge is presented in full colour and full-size. Introductory essays deal with related topics, such as ampullae, small pewter triptychs and the archaeological excavations of Diksmuide in 2016 where many new badges were found. The book contains spectacular finds and new types of badges, both religious and profane. Variety and quality of previously published badges have increased. Previously wrongly interpreted or unidentified badges have now been correctly identified.
Since the publication of HEILIG EN PROFAAN 1 (1993), HEILIG EN PROFAAN 2 (2001) and HEILIG EN PROFAAN 3 (2012) excavations in the Low Countries have brought to light many new finds scattered over various public and private collections. The Medieval Badges Foundation has successfully appealed to Dutch and Flemish institutions and services, museums and private collectors for their permission to publish their badges and ampullae in the fourth volume of the series HEILIG EN PROFAAN. With over 4,300 badges the four volumes of HEILIG EN PROFAAN form a fascinating and mutually complementary work of reference.
