HEILIG EN PROFAAN (SACRED AND PROFANE) 3 is published by the Medieval Badges Foundation, Gooyerdijk 43, 3947 NB Langbroek. In this book over 1,300 badges are shown full-size, together with data concerning sites, measurements, material, methods of attachment, dating and any inscriptions. The hard-cover book measures 21 x 27 cm, 440 pages. It is a Dutch-language publication with summaries in English.

Since the publication of HEILIG EN PROFAAN 1, in 1993 and HEILIG EN PROFAAN 2 in 2001, excavations in the Low Countries have brought to light many new types of religious and profane badges now in public and private collections. The Medieval Badges Foundation has appealed successfully to many Dutch and Flemish academic institutions and services, museums and private collectors for their permission for publication. This has resulted in the publication of HEILIG EN PROFAAN 3.

HEILIG EN PROFAAN 3 is an essential supplement to volumes 1 and 2:

·It includes a large number of new types of badges.

·Due to spectacular finds, variety and quality have increased.

·Some badges of which only fragments have been published previously are now represented in full.

·Several previously wrongly identified or unidentified badges have now been classified correctly.

In a separate section authors deal with related topics, such as moulds and the casting process, the site of Arnemuiden, depictions of pilgrims’ badges in medieval books and badges in the shape of buttons. Additionally, a few related objects are singled out like a lost pewter triptych from Aachen and a herald’s badge. The three volumes of HEILIG EN PROFAAN, in which over 3,500 badges are described form fascinating and mutually complementary books of reference. HEILIG EN PROFAAN (SACRED AND PROFANE) 3 costs
€ 60 excluding bank, packaging and postal charges. ISBN 978-90-9026619-0 Please order via the website: www.medievalbadges.org
